1 サンプルエッセイ

In some countries, an increasing number of people are suffering from health problems due to eating too much unhealthy food. It is, therefore, necessary for governments to impose a higher tax on this kind of food. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

You should write at least 250 words.

It is absurd that an increasing number of people have adopted unhealthy eating habits after being attracted by the cheap prices of junk food. Under such circumstances, I completely agree with the idea that governments must impose significant taxes on these products because it nudges consumers to alter their diets and additional incomes are necessary for curing an increasing number of patients.

To begin with, fast foods and junk foods must be taxed to discourage consumers from choosing these unhealthy products. This is because people tend to prioritize prices over long-term health concerns. In this context, currently without governmental interventions, healthy food is less likely to win the price competition as natural ingredients cost much more than sugars or artificial flavors. To give you an example, the majority of Japanese students prefer fast food over traditional Japanese meals as the former costs only half the price of the latter. These phenomena have to be tackled by the government as the fast-food industry must not prey on people with poor financial literacy who do not realize unhealthy food eventually costs heavily in the future by damaging their bodies.

Another reason is that the excise duty could be utilized to treat lifestyle-disease patients. This is a suitable way of financing the medical costs because those who feed on junk food are more likely to develop chronic diseases like diabetes. Therefore, it is fair to pass a law that consumers bear more taxes based on their consumption of unhealthy meals. To illustrate this, if a huge hamburger fan pays three dollars every time he purchases a hamburger, it could total a sufficient amount to provide sufficient insulin injections once he has developed diabetes. Overall, governmental funds for lifestyle diseases must be financed by those who are likely to need them.

To summarize, the government must impose significant taxes on harmful foods to prevent people from its excessive consumption. In addition, governmental budgets for lifestyle diseases must be collected from citizens based on the consumption of toxic ingredients.
