本記事ではIELTS のライティングTASK2のサンプルエッセイ(解答例)を紹介します。トピックは子供に読書をさせるのは無駄か否か。

1 サンプルエッセイ

Topic:

Many believe that reading books is a waste of time and children would be better served doing something more useful.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

You should write at least 250 words.

Essay:

The efficacy of reading books continues to be a controversial topic among parents. Some maintain that children do not benefit from reading books. From my perspective, it can be true if children do not find reading interesting. However, in other cases, they could gain insights into anything on this planet from books.

To begin with, there is no use forcing youngsters to read novels or biographies as it tends to end up in vain. This is because they pretend to read books instead of trying to figure out the essence of the stories or building new vocabulary as their purposes are to show their parents that they follow what is instructed. In this case, it is extremely pitiful as kids squander their childhood by merely sitting in front of papers. Consequently, they would regret in the future that their childhood could have been better utilized by doing other activities.

On the other hand, for voracious young readers, books inspire them to be intelligent as authors are experts in their fields and meticulously intertwine stories or delineate scientific phenomena for readers. This inspiration is extremely valuable, as the majority of kids do not have an opportunity to meet with prominent people, such as a corporate CEO or a Nobel Prize laureate. To illustrate this, having read several journals about quantum physics, a precocious boy can develop his academic career as a physicist in the early stages of his life. Overall, reading books can nurture young readers in several ways, as long as they are curious about the topics.

To summarize, I agree with the idea that reading books are not useful if children are not attracted to them. However, it can be useful if readers voluntarily take interest and absorb the messages of its author.

 

2 エッセイの構成について

今回のエッセイはTo what extent do you agree or disagree? とトピック(子供の読書は無駄か?)にどの程度賛成するかが問われていますので、子供が無理やり読書をさせられた場合は賛成。一方で、子供が主体的に本を手にした場合は有意義と主張しています。

Intro

→トピックのパラフレーズと自分の主張の提示。

Body Paragraph

→ main idea : there is no use forcing young ones to read novels or biographies as it tends to end up in vainと子供の読書は無駄という問いに賛成し、その理由について説明

Body Paragraph

→ main idea: for voracious young readers, books inspire them to be intelligent と読書は子供の知性を飛躍させると述べ、その理由について説明。

Use のFormalな表現。意味は「使う」。Childhood could have been better utilized は「子供時代をもっと上手く過ごすことが出来だろう。」の意味。
