1 サンプルエッセイ
Topic:
Some people think that students in high or secondary school can choose courses freely, others think that courses such as mathematics must be compulsory. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
You should write at least 250 words.
Essay:
Ideal school curriculums for teenagers continue to be a controversial topic. Some maintain that they must incorporate several compulsory subjects, such as mathematics or national history while others aver that teenagers could maximize their potential by choosing the subjects of their interest. In my view, I espouse the latter as current societies need specialists rather than generalists.
On the one hand, traditional curriculums are aimed to produce generalists who are familiar with a range of fundamental matters, which are ensured by incorporating compulsory subjects into school curriculums. This has an edge in producing generalists who work for governments or private conglomerates as these workplaces seek malleable generalists. To give you an example, if a journalist has an intimate knowledge of both liberal arts and science, his boss can develop his career by assigning various interviews with political magnates or prominent scientists. In contrast, if he had been eschewing learning science, his vocational opportunities would be restricted. Overall, compulsory subjects benefit adolescents in the future by nurturing versatile skills.
On the other hand, others argue that modern societies value experts and mandatory subjects must not be a hindrance in developing expertise. Indeed, it is facile for an expert to be employed as a specialist in a business enterprise or receive projects as an individual entrepreneur online. To illustrate this, a prominent psychologist can focus on consultations with his clients using his psychological prowess and no one cares about his mathematical ability. If he was forced to study algebra in school regardless of his antipathy to it, it was merely a torturous experience. This tendency can be observed in various industries, such as programming, stock trading, creative writing, etc. Therefore, in parallel with the societal shift, modern schools have to consider organizing flexible timetables that encourage adolescents to develop their strengths.
To summarize, it is understandable that traditional curriculums incorporate several fixed subjects to produce generalists. However, I believe emphasis on expertise can be more beneficial in the current society. Hence, school curriculums need to be modified in accordance with this trend.
