1 サンプルエッセイ
Topic:
In many countries, the legal driving age is 18 years old. Some people believe it is the right age to learn how to drive a car, whereas others say that the minimum age should be 25. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
You should write at least 250 words.
Essay:
Cars are essential in one’s daily life and many teenagers look forward to acquiring a driver’s license when they reach legal driving age. Some adults aver that the minimum age must be twenty-five years old citing that mature drivers are safer drivers. On the other hand, others maintain that late teens have to be entitled to drive a car for their work and leisure. I believe the latter must be prioritized.
To begin with, some risk-averse adults tend to claim that it is too dangerous for people in their early twenties to drive a car as traffic accidents could be fatal. This is based on an assumption that young drivers are less compliant with traffic rules and unaware of the potential risk in driving. To give you an example, having come of age, every year a few new adults end up running over innocent pedestrians after drinking too much alcohol. If the licenses were given a few years later, they might have acquired a more matured attitude towards alcohol and these accidents could have been prevented. Thus, raising legal driving age is a way to reduce traffic accidents.
Nevertheless, others state that changing the current system would significantly restrict twenty somethings as they need a license for their jobs and journeys. Indeed, it is common in many countries that a not insignificant proportion of high school graduates start working in industries where a driver’s license is required. To illustrate this, an adolescent, who wants to be a private tour guide using a car, needs to wait until the legal driving age to initiate his business. If he had to wait until he became twenty-five years old, the prospect would be less than enticing. Overall, a driver’s license is a basic prerequisite for young adults to ensure as many vocational choices as seniors benefit from.
To summarize, it is understandable that some citizens are apprehensive about young motorists in terms of safety. However, in my view, the right to drive has to be given to adolescents as they deserve the same individual rights as other adults.
