1 サンプルエッセイ
Topic:
Some people believe that it is good to share as much information as possible in scientific research, business, and academic world. Others believe that some information is too important or too valuable to be shared freely. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
You should write at least 250 words.
Essay:
The confidentiality of scientific research information continues to be a controversial topic. Some aver that scientific discoveries should be publicized immediately as it accelerates the speed of scientific advancement. Contrastingly, others maintain that some innovative discoveries must be protected to ensure the competitiveness of business enterprises. From my perspective, basic scientific knowledge should be open sourced. Having said that, companies do not need to divulge all of their intellectual assets.
To begin with, sharing information accelerates the development of science and technology. When a new thesis is published by a scientist or an engineer, it can be a building-block for others to develop the idea further. For example, many scientists all over the world have been researching cancer to establish better medical treatments. When a prestigious scientist found out cancer had an immune system similar to a normal healthy cell, it was share with others instantly. This inspired many scientists to move on to the next step, such as researching how cancer’s immune system can be deactivated.
On the other hand, sharing intellectual assets are likely to discourage companies from spending their funds and human resources on research and development because they cannot earn a profit if their competitors use the same knowledge and technology. To illustrate this, many automobile manufacturers revamp their factories again and again in order to assemble parts more precisely and minimize the defective cost. Enhanced assembly methods can be an edge in price competition as long as they are secret to others. Therefore, governments and other relevant authorities must allow companies to protect their proprietary information.
To summarize, sharing information is generally beneficial in terms of advancing technology. Nevertheless, I believe some corporate intellectual properties, which are the source of competitiveness, must be protected to promote increased investment in research and development.
