Topic:
Giving children and adolescents pocket money is common throughout the world. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this practice and give your own opinion.
You should write at least 250 words.
Essay:
A child’s allowance continues to be a controversial topic across the globe. Some people support it in terms of developing financial planning skills and appreciating the value of products. Contrastingly, others maintain that pocket money discourages adolescents from developing financial independence and could be used inappropriately for the purchase of illicit drugs. From my perspective, the former benefits outweigh the latter concerns.
Pocket money plays a significant role in nurturing financial planning skills, as monthly amounts usually do not cover what children genuinely want to purchase. To gain toys or fancy clothes, they have to figure out how many months they need to save a particular amount and control their cravings for snacks and juices during the period. Furthermore, pocket money encourages teenagers to contemplate whether each item is worth its price. To illustrate this, when teenagers have to purchase their own lunch with their own funds, they are more aware of their own spending than they would be if the food was purchased for them. For teenagers in this case, every dollar counts. This habit would be an asset in their adulthoods as adults must best utilize their limited budgets for themselves and their families.
On the other hand, monetary indulgence could prevent offspring from achieving financial independence. This is because children interpret that money is granted by their parents without effort. This mindset could be devastating in their future as parents cannot be relied upon forever. For instance, those who financially depend on their parents tend to face severe predicaments when their parents retire or suddenly become unable to work. Middle-aged people who failed to develop a skill to earn a salary would find it difficult to catch up to their peers and will discover that they have been left behind. Other than that, pocket money could trigger illegal trading amongst children. Juveniles’ craving for money is prevalent and they seek a chance to gain money in exchange for illegal items, such as weed or cigarettes. It is better not to have money than to end up being addicted to them.
To summarize, even though pocket money could potentially precipitate the aforementioned problems, I believe the benefits of fostering financial planning skills and a cost-benefit concept must be prioritized.
