1 サンプルエッセイ
Topic:
Some educationalists think that international exchange visits will benefit teenagers at the school. To what extent do you agree or disagree ?
You should write at least 250 words.
Essay:
International exchange programs provide opportunities for young people to experience foreign cultures. This exposure transforms the values of teenagers and it generally outweighs benefits from domestic educational programs. However, teenagers should not prioritize study-abroad programs over their career path.
For adolescents having grown up in their own countries, interaction with foreign students and norms can be a precious chance to reconsider their values and lifelong goals. During an exchange program, students face novel ways of building relationships and respecting different gender norms living in different societal structures. Comparing these cultural differences, they can take in multiple perspectives and gain insights into the pros and cons of each norm. To give you an example, having seen many immigrants integrated into societies in the U.S., some Japanese students, who have grown up in Japan’s homogeneous culture, gain the opportunity to comprehend how expats contribute to economies and what type of culture and social system attracts them.
On the other hand, foreign exchange programs should not be in the way of career development. This is because the latter is crucial for a teenager to gain desirable jobs in the future. Considering the fact that grades in high school have a significant influence on obtaining admission to prestigious universities, high school students should focus on studying at their domestic schools where they have more advantages in career decisions than studying abroad. To illustrate this, if a Japanese student aspiring to become a doctor moved to Zurich, he would face a huge language barrier of Swiss-German and be unable to achieve high enough grades to enroll in a medical faculty. As a result, they might come to regret that they should have stayed in Japanese high school for a greater chance of becoming a doctor.
To summarize, overseas experiences are generally beneficial in gaining new perspectives and enriching values. Having said that, teenagers must not plan exchange programs at a crossroad in their career path.
